The Paris Municipal band is wrapping up its 99th consecutive year of concerts tonight at Bywater’s Park in Downtown Paris.
Conductor Joe Watson said the concert will have selections the entire family will enjoy, alongside historical band standards.
Watson said music during the night’s concert will range from John Philip Sousa through a night at the movies and a heavy selection of 60s thru 80s pop and rock music.
“You will hear the Sousa’s Daughters of Texas, written for Texas Woman’s University,” he said. “The beautiful melodies of “Shenandoah”, a traditional American Folk song, as well as “Travelin’ Music,” this lively setting of an old-time fiddle tune will send you “travelin” on a delightful musical journey! Written back in the 1850s, we know it as Arkansas Traveler.”
During each concert, the band plays a hymn, and tonight’s hymn will be “Amazing Grace.”
“The band will also take you to Broadway for a night of Phantom of the Opera, by Andrew Lloyd Webber featuring “All I Ask of You”, “Think of Me” and “Music of the Night”. Then a trip to the modern silver screen and the theme to Marvel Comics, “The Avengers.””
He said the band will play the theme song to the latest installment of Marvel movies’ “Black Widow.”
“The Band will also take you back on a trip through time to hear some classic pop and rock music,” he said. “The Best of Carole King featuring “It’s Too Late,” “Jazzman,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and “I Feel the Earth Move.” Blood, Sweat and Tears hit song from 1969, “Spinning Wheel” is a song everyone will remember.”
The band will feature medleys by a couple of big groups from the rock and roll era.
“Bywater’s park will be filled with the sounds of “Make Me Smile,” “Saturday in the Park” and “25 or 6 to 4”, all classic hits by the group Chicago and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Separate Ways”, “Open Arms” and “Any Way You Want It”.
The concert will begin promptly at 8:30 p.m. at Bywater’s Park, and if rain sets in, the concert will move to Love Civic Center’s Pavilion.
“Clearly one of the biggest concerts performed by the Paris Municipal Band in many years,” Watson said. “Also included are a few more twists and turns that you will enjoy. Come out and bring your lawn chair. The band would love to see you in the audience.”
