The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is warning citizens of a phone scam in which the caller impersonates an agent and threatens to arrest or open an investigation on the recipient.
“The OSBI has received information from citizens that individuals are contacting them, advising they are agents with the OSBI, and calling about suspicious activity on their phones. The caller threatened to open an investigation,” said the agency online. “We have also received information about callers identifying themselves as agents threatening arrests unless money or other things of value are provided.”
The OSBI said they will not contact anyone nor threaten to open a case and will never ask for money or valuable things to make an investigation “go away.”
“If you are ever in doubt about who is contacting you, please hang up, look up the main number of the OSBI (or other agency) and ask for verification of that agent’s identity.”
