On Thursday, families gathered for the inaugural Bright Beginnings Mommy and Me meeting at Higgins Elementary, a new initiative from North Lamar Independent School District (NLISD).
Parents and their pre-kindergarten students came together to create sensory boxes while engaging with the district’s occupational therapist, Joanna Bankston, and physical therapist, Mindy Dority.
The event provided valuable insights on developmental milestones and strategies to prepare children for school.
The monthly meetings are part of NLISD’s efforts to support child development and school readiness through the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) High-Quality Prekindergarten Family Engagement initiative. These gatherings aim to help families navigate their child’s growth while providing a platform for moms to connect, share experiences, and learn alongside Higgins Elementary staff.
Future Bright Beginnings meetings will continue to offer a range of activities designed to engage both parents and children, with a special emphasis on creating a welcoming school environment for young learners. The upcoming sessions will take place on the following dates from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM in the Higgins Cafeteria:
- February 27
- March 27
- April 24
Each meeting will bring new opportunities to support family engagement and prepare children for a smooth transition into their educational journey.
