North Lamar High School junior trombonist, Colton Wilson, earned the silver medal in the National Trombone Solo Competition held at Ft. Meyer in Arlington, Virginia.

He was one of three selected from across the nation in the under 20 category to compete on Thursday, March 8 in Brucker Hall that is located next to Arlington National Cemetery and practice hall of the United States Army Band.

The event was sponsored by the U.S. Army “Pershing’s Own” Band during the American Trombone Workshop.

“We were very proud of his performance, and he was judged by five of the best trombone teachers in the country,” said NLHS band director Jason R. Smith.  “Truly an honor just to play for them. We were very proud of how he did, and he was by far the youngest competitor, which everyone was amazed to find out he was only a junior.” Smith traveled with Wilson and his parents for the event.

“I was blown away by the whole workshop,” said Wilson.  “I had the opportunity to hear some of the best trombone players in the country, meet almost all the makers of some of the best trombones from around the world, and compete with some really amazing musicians. I want to go back next year.”

After placing second at the National Trombone Solo Competition, Colton Wilson (center) was greeted by his mother, Tina Hale, and NLHS Band Director Jason R. Smith.
