North Lamar High School senior powerlifter Luke Elrod brought home a finalist medal, placing fifth at the state powerlifting meet in Abilene on March 26.
The powerlifting competition requires students to complete three attempts each at back squat, bench press and deadlift. The heaviest, successful lift from each type is added together to determine the total weight. At the state meet, Luke squatted 365 pounds, bench pressed 225 pounds and deadlifted 425 pounds, for a total weight of 1015 pounds.
Luke’s coaches are Brenton Whitaker and Patrick Watkins.
“Luke had been preparing for this opportunity since his freshman year and took full advantage of his strength,” Coach Whitaker said. “It was fun being a part of his journey.”
