For students who do not have masks when they get to school, the Broken Bow School District will provide one to them — for a cost.
As of Monday, the district has started selling masks to students who come without one.
“We have been very accommodating and patient with students as they continue to arrive to school without a mask,” the district said in a social media post. “We have issued reusable masks countless times to our students, but now they have depleted our resources.”
The district is selling the masks to the maskless for $1. If the student is unable to buy a mask, the district said they will then be asked to call a parent or guardian to bring them a mask or $1 to purchase one.
“Our students are all aware there are several classrooms they attend daily that masks are required. This decision to continue to protect our most vulnerable was supported and approved by our school board several months ago.”
The Oklahoma state school board does not have a mask mandate in place, requiring students to wear a mask while in school. However, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt said in a press conference a school district which enforces masks is no longer required to quarantine potentially exposed students and teachers — unless they show COVID symptoms.
Broken Bow resides in McCurtain County, which has 3,406 confirmed COVID-19 cases and more than 30 new cases added Wednesday, according to Johns Hopkins University. The county has seen 57 COVID-19-related deaths thus far.
“We respectfully ask you to please remind your children each morning to bring their masks,” Broken Bow school district continued.
