Police arrested 59-year old Jeffrey Merrill on Thursday after he fired a handgun at deputies responding to a disturbance call in Red River County.
Around 8:58 a.m., Red River County Deputies were dispatched to CR 2375 (Fish Camp Road) in response to a disturbance involving weapons.
Upon arrival, deputies met with victims, obtained statements, and attempted to make contact with the suspect (Merrill).
Deputies called Merrill out of a makeshift building attached to a camper when he emerged and fired a handgun at the deputies. Deputies returned fire, and Merrill retreated into the makeshift building.
Merrill later exited the makeshift building and was taken into custody.
He was transported to the Red River County Sheriff’s Office and arrested for aggravated assault with a Deadly Weapon. Additional charges are expected from the Texas Rangers.
Numerous agencies responded to assist, including Bogata Police Department, Lamar County Sheriff’s Office and their Special Response Team, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Texas Rangers, DPS Special Response Team, DPS Troopers, Emergency Management Coordinators (EMC) from Red River and Lamar County, LifeNet EMS personnel and Red River County Constable.
