Convicted murdered Gonzalo Lopez, who escaped from a prison bus after stabbing its driver last month, was fatally shot by law enforcement after he allegedly killed one adult and four children before stealing a truck on Thursday.
In an online post shortly before 9 p.m., officials with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said law enforcement agencies received a call from an individual who had become concerned after not hearing from an elderly relative.
“Law enforcement officers responded to the residence and discovered the bodies of five individuals. The victims included one adult and four minors. Law enforcement remains on scene and continues to process incident information.:”
At approximately 10:30 p.m., the TDCJ said law enforcement in Alascosa County located the stolen vehicle, disabled it with spike strips, and gunfire ensued.
“At approximately 22:30, the TDCJ received information that Lopez had been shot by law enforcement in Jourdanton, Texas, South of San Antonio. Lopez has been confirmed deceased, and no law enforcement officers were reported to be harmed during the exchange.”
During a press conference, Jason Clark with the TDCJ said the home is not believed to be the victim family’s primary residence, but their “weekend residence” and that the attack appears to be random.
“I would say this is a tragedy that you had five individuals, who lost their lives,” he said. “I am thankful [though], that tonight, Gonzalo Lopez is unable to harm anyone else.”
Lopez was serving a life sentence for capital murder before escaping on May 12, 2022.
