School may be out for the rest of the year as far as attending classes on campus goes, but Detroit ISD didn’t let that stop them from honoring their 2020 senior class.
“The school purchased signs to honor our seniors and their futures. We have posted where the seniors are planning to go to whether it is college or straight into the workforce,” said Detroit ISD teacher Tracy Denny. “Our DISD Superintendent, Mrs. Kathie Thompson, and our DISD School Board agreed on the idea to support our seniors, and they had them made for each student. “
The signs have each seniors’ name on it and their future no matter what they are choosing to do. Denny said they are placed front and center of the High School, where members of the community, alongside friends and family, can celebrate this year’s senior class.
Denny said that the idea for the signs came before the pandemic even hit. The school was aiming to do something special for the senior class to recognize each student and their future choices.
“We were going to have “Senior Signing Day” where every senior would have been able to sign a letter of intent for college or to the workforce at our High School gym,” said Denny.
The event would have seen each student sign at a designated table with a backdrop giving each of them a memento to keep and also share within the community as they prepared for their next big step.
Now, instead of the formal Senior Signing Day, Detroit ISD hopes that the community can take a drive past the high school and view the signs honoring the senior class as they finish the year a little differently than the traditional send-off.
