More than 47 Lamar County residents received an unexpected blessing Saturday as members of St. Paul Baptist Church spread out across local gas stations to pay for fuel for complete strangers during the church’s community-wide Free Gas Giveaway.
From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 13 church members visited gas stations throughout Paris and surrounding communities, selecting motorists at random and covering the cost of their gasoline. The outreach was designed to provide practical assistance while sharing a message of hope during a season when many families continue to face financial challenges.
“We know these are trying times for many people,” said Dr. Shay Bills, pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church. “We simply want to remind our community that Christ loves you, and He keeps His promises. He has promised to never leave us nor forsake us, and to always take care of us. Our prayer is that every person who received this blessing left knowing they are seen, valued, and loved by God.”
Throughout the day, recipients expressed surprise and heartfelt gratitude as church members paid for their fuel. Many accepted words of encouragement, and some welcomed prayer, making the outreach about far more than gasoline. For many, it was a reminder that kindness still exists and that hope can be found in the most unexpected places.
By the end of the day, more than 47 residents had been blessed through the effort, demonstrating the impact a small group of people can have when they come together with a shared purpose of serving others.
The outreach reflects St. Paul Baptist Church’s ongoing commitment to meeting both spiritual and practical needs in the community. Church leaders believe that simple acts of generosity can open doors to meaningful conversations, strengthen neighborhoods, and demonstrate Christ’s love in tangible ways.
Founded in 1867, St. Paul Baptist Church has faithfully served the Paris and Lamar County community for more than 150 years. Through community outreach, ministry, and service, the church continues its mission of being a beacon of hope and compassion for all.
“We may not be able to solve every problem,” Bills said, “but we can make someone’s day a little brighter and remind them that God has not forgotten them.”
