On Tuesday, District 3 Paris City Councilman Benny Plata resigned amidst controversy over comments made on social media.
Mayor Steve Clifford called an emergency city council meeting at noon today to discuss the comment made by Plata.
“Councilmember Benny Plata District 3 has posted a comment on social media in response to a post on the George Floyd situation and the ensuing protest to with quote, ‘why don’t you leave America if it’s so bad’ un-quote,” said Clifford during the city council meeting.
Plata responded stating, “I really care about the city I serve, and I was responding to one person berating America.”
Earlier, Clifford stated that his (Plata’s) statement was inappropriate and highly divisive and in no way reflects the views and values of the Paris City Council.
“Our nation is in turmoil over the death of Mr. George Floyd and also due to the pandemic. Our leaders have a special responsibility to the citizens during this difficult time. We must be wise, strong and empathic. We must hold ourselves to the highest possible standard as we help guide our community through these crises.”
