Alvis Benton Broadway, Jr., 89, of Sumner, passed away Friday, August 10, 2018.
Bright-Holland Funeral Home has scheduled services for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 14th, at Victory Baptist Church with Rev. Buddy Barnett & Rev. D. J. Harris officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in McDonald Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Broadway, the son of Alvis Benton Broadway, Sr. & Esther Naomi Koehn Broadway, was born Nov. 1, 1928, in Bluegrove, Texas.
He served his country in the U. S. Army, the U. S. Air Force, and the U. S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He drove a truck before beginning work in his wood shop, Specialty Wood Products, which he owned & operated a number of years. Alvis later drove a truck for Ray Hutchinson until he was seventy years old.
He was a member of Maxey Baptist Church.
On September 29, 1955, he married Kay Frances Poole, building forty-six years of family and memories before her death on Aug. 6, 2002. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, Ronnie Slagle, siblings, and brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law; Dewey Brown, Jake Broadway (Dave), Anna Hollingsworth, Don Simmons, Jane Broadway, Edmond Broadway (Sue), and Pete Broadway.
Survivors include four children; Alvis Benton Broadway, III of Paris, Brenda Slagle of Maypearl, Denise Nicholson (David) of Sumner and Renee Sherrill (Larry) of Paris, grandchildren; Chris Slagle (Valerie), Mindy Schwalm (Corbin), Dustin Broadway (Kimmy), Joseph Nicholson, Ethan Nicholson (Makayla), A. W. (Dub) Melton (Allison), Monty Melton (Stefanie), Monica Melton, Michael Farris, and Jill Sherrill, great-grandchildren; Garrett Slagle, Gunner Slagle, Lillian Nicholson, Liam Broadway, Spur Nicholson, Emmett Broadway, Bronc Nicholson, Tyler Melton, William Melton, Hunter Melton and Lexi Melton, siblings and brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law; Jeanne Brown, Burl Hollingsworth, Mary Simmons, Bobby Broadway, Ursula Broadway and Ken Broadway (Pat), along with many nieces & nephews and a host of friends.
Casket bearers will be Dustin Broadway, Chris Slagle, Joseph Nicholson, Ethan Nicholson, A. W. (Dub) Melton, Monty Melton, Michael Farris and Corbin Schwalm. His great-grandchildren will serve as honorary bearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Maxey Baptist Church, 602 CR 34440, Sumner, TX 75486.
