When Beryl Jean was a young girl, she was out hoeing cotton when a car passed by. At that moment, she decided she wanted a different future for herself. She was going to college and would leave the cotton patch and she did exactly that!
Beryl married Hub Miller during World War II. When the war was over, Hub and Beryl Jean attended PJC and East Texas State University Commerce. She went to work at Red River Army Depot and her tenure there was 30 years at the Texarkana, TX. location. She began as a stenographer at the depot. As a steno clerk she transcribed dictation all day and took shorthand). As time passed, she was promoted to Inventory Coordinator as well as filled in as Branch Chief. When she retired, she had been promoted to instructor. The girl from the cotton field was the first female to have that position! She retired at age 55.
After retirement from Red River Army Depot, she worked at the bank in Bogata for several years. She truly enjoyed people in the community. Her work there was rewarding seeing people daily that brought her joy and fulfillment.
Known as “Skeeter” to childhood friends, Beryl was a devoted mother, wife and Christian. She arrived home from work every day from Red River around 6:00 pm, yet always cooked supper and breakfast for her family. Her work continued through the weekend doing house chores, going to ball games and carrying food to those in need.
She was a lifelong member of the Fulbright church of Christ in Fulbright, TX. She loved her church home and its members. Family and friends were always welcome in her home. It was a safe harbor with an open door, plenty of snacks and often a good meal waiting. More importantly, it was a place where everyone felt loved, accepted and at home. One rule applied if she was napping you had better wake up!
Beryl was plainspoken, practical and startlingly realistic! She often said to her children, “it just doesn’t look like I can die”. She was always ready to meet the Lord; she is now at peace!
