North Lamar ISD families came together for an evening of creativity, connection and Panther pride during a recent Parent & Family Engagement overall decorating event.
Moms, dads and students brought jeans and overalls to transform into one-of-a-kind North Lamar spirit wear using plenty of blue, gold and even a little glitter. Families painted side by side, shared ideas and created designs they can proudly wear throughout the school year. Hats were also provided for families to paint and personalize.
Credit Union of Texas joined the event and provided brisket mac and cheese for families to enjoy while waiting for their creations to dry. North Lamar High School students who work through the Credit Union of Texas SMART Branch also helped throughout the event, assisting families and helping make the evening a success.
“Parent and family engagement does not always have to happen around a table or during a formal meeting,” said Melissa Allen, Parent Family Engagement Coordinator. “Sometimes it looks like parents and kids sitting beside each other with paintbrushes in their hands, laughing, talking and creating something together. Those moments of connection matter, and at the same time, we are building a community of Panther spirit and belonging.”
Several additional family engagement opportunities are planned for the fall.
Pinewood Derby Race – September 15
Families can put STEM skills to work as students design, build and race their own Pinewood Derby cars. Cars may be picked up at North Lamar Intermediate prior to the event.
Bright Beginnings: Little Chefs – September 17 at Everett and September 24 at Parker at 10 a.m.
Designed for young children and their families, Little Chefs will focus on healthy food choices and snacks while giving parents and children an opportunity to learn and participate together.
Paint Your Parent – September 22
Students will paint portraits of their parents while parents paint portraits of their children. In addition to plenty of laughs, the activity will encourage positive self-image and create a dedicated moment for parents and students to slow down, connect and see one another through a different perspective.
Night of Family Literacy – October 1
Students and families will meet North Lamar players, participate in fun family games and learn simple strategies they can use at home to make reading together engaging and meaningful.
Through events like these, North Lamar ISD continues working to make family engagement welcoming, practical and enjoyable while providing opportunities for parents and students to learn, laugh and create memories together.
