Although Katherine Ferruzzo never had the opportunity to fulfill her dream of becoming a special education teacher, her passion for serving students with different abilities is making a lasting impact in classrooms across Texas—including those at Paris ISD.
As teachers prepared to welcome students back for the 2026-2027 school year, Paris ISD’s Special Services Department received custom sensory kits and visual learning materials created through the Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation. The resources were carefully assembled over the past several months by volunteers dedicated to carrying forward Katherine’s dream of supporting students with special needs.
Katherine was preparing to attend The University of Texas at Austin to pursue a degree in special education when her life was tragically cut short during the devastating Texas Hill Country flooding on July 4, 2025, at Camp Mystic. Known for her servant’s heart and unwavering compassion, Katherine lost her life while trying to protect and care for the young girls entrusted to her. Her courage and selflessness inspired her family to establish the Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation so that her passion for serving children with different abilities would continue to impact classrooms for generations to come.
Last spring, representatives from the foundation contacted Paris ISD Special Services Director D’Anna Graham to learn how they could best serve the district’s special education classrooms. Rather than making a traditional donation, the foundation partnered with the district to identify the specific sensory and visual supports teachers needed most. Over the following months, volunteers carefully created and assembled customized materials before personally delivering the completed kits in time for the start of the new school year.
“It was so special for us to come deliver these materials for the teachers of Paris ISD,” said Andrea Ferruzzo. “We’re so grateful for the opportunity to share Katherine’s passion for special education. She would surely be so proud of the work that countless volunteers put into creating these visual learning tools to benefit Paris teachers and students with different abilities.”
For Paris ISD, the gift represents far more than classroom supplies. The sensory kits will help teachers create engaging learning environments while supporting students’ communication, emotional regulation, and individual learning needs.
Althea Dixon, Superintendent of Paris ISD, said the foundation’s generosity reflects the power of compassion and service. “Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in an environment where they feel supported, understood, and empowered to succeed. We are incredibly grateful to the Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation for investing in our students and our teachers. Their generosity will make a meaningful difference in classrooms across our district.”
Special Services Director D’Anna Graham said the partnership has been an incredible blessing for the district. “These sensory kits are much more than classroom resources—they are tools that help remove barriers to learning. Knowing they were created in honor of someone whose heart was devoted to special education makes this gift even more meaningful. Our teachers and students will benefit from Katherine’s legacy every single day.”
While Katherine never had the opportunity to teach in her own classroom, her influence is now reaching students she never had the chance to meet. This school year, teachers across Paris ISD will use materials created in her honor—continuing a legacy of compassion, service, and hope that reminds us one life can inspire countless others.
As a new school year begins, Katherine’s dream is alive in Paris ISD classrooms. Every visual support placed on a desk, every sensory tool that helps a child succeed, and every smile inspired by these resources is a reminder that a life devoted to serving others can leave an impact far beyond a single classroom. Through the Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation, Katherine’s compassion continues to change lives—one student, one teacher, and one act of kindness at a time.
