Local Waste Connections operator Justin Wise recently earned himself second place against the toughest competitors in the business at the 2025 Waste Connections International Equipment Rodeo in Houston, Texas
The International Rodeo brings together the top operators from six regions spanning from California to Florida, from Canada to Texas, and even Alaska.
Wise, who has been with Waste Connections for over six years, first entered the competition in 2023, where he placed third at the North Texas Divisional Equipment Rodeo.
He returned in 2024, placing second, however when the first-place winner was unable to compete at the regional level, Wise was invited to represent his division at the Southern Regional Equipment Rodeo in Lafayette, Louisiana, where he once again earned second place.
This year, in 2025, Wise returned to the divisional competition for the third year in a row and captured first place, securing his spot at Regionals in Lafayette.
Competing among the best from across the Southern Region, he earned second place for the second consecutive year.
Shortly after, Justin learned he would again advance — this time to the International Equipment Rodeo in Houston — after the regional winner was unable to participate.
Despite the stiff competition, he once again claimed second place, representing both his division and the entire Southern Region with pride.
The annual event celebrates the skill, safety, and professionalism of Waste Connections drivers, equipment operators, and maintenance professionals.
Competitors advance through several levels of competition — from district to divisional, then regional, and finally international — demonstrating precision, control, and safe operation through a series of challenging obstacle courses and skill-based tests.
To qualify, employees must have at least two years of service, a minimum of one year incident-free, and no recent disciplinary actions.
The competition promotes one of Waste Connections’ core values: safety.
It also recognizes employees for their excellence, fosters professional development, and builds camaraderie in a festive, family-friendly atmosphere.
“I just try to do my job safely and do it right every day,” Wise said. “To get the chance to compete and represent our team at the international level — that’s something I’m really proud of.”
