As of August 1st, University Interscholastic League (UIL) marching band students will be required to pass a physical entering their first and third years of high school to participate.

This new rule also applies to seventh and eighth-grade students that participate in marching band.

“I believe that the physicals for marching band participants are a good idea and necessary requirement,” said NLHS Band Director Randy Jones.

Jones explained, with the performance level that is required from participants it makes sense to have each participant go through a physical.

North Lamar ISD Associate Band Director Jason Smith said, “We are excited that UIL has included marching band into the requirements for physicals. Our activity has become very athletic and our students’ safety is the foremost concern; so, anything we can do to help that, we need to do.”

In light of this new rule, students will be able to get free physicals done at the Paris High School Gym on Saturday, May 18th.

Boys will begin at 7:50 a.m. and girls at 9:15 a.m.

“Many of the area Doctors have agreed to come to work this day for all the students needing physicals in the surrounding area schools.”

Chad Hellberg, the Paris ISD Athletic Department organized this for all the area schools.
