Two injured in home explosion in Chicota Monday night

Two people were injured in a home explosion Monday night on Jan. 6, on FM197 close to CR 35460 in Chicota. 

Mulitple Volunteer Fire Departments were toned out just after 9 p.m. to a structure fire/home explosion with one possible person still trapped. 

“We didn’t know the extent of the situation when we first arrived, and I am grateful to the quick response and efficient work all personnel did on the scene,” said Shane McDowra from Chicota VFD and incident command on scene. 

There were two occupants of the home injured during the blast, according to officials. One occupant was inside the structure and had to extracted by first responders. The second occupant was said to be outside when the explosion happened. 

As of Tuesday morning, injuries were unknown, and both people were care flighted from the Chicota VFD station lawn on FM197 to the metroplex in a stable condition. 

Lamar County Sheriff Scott Cass and Lamar County Emergency Manager Quincy Blount advised that state officials were notified immediately. 

Tuesday morning Blount advised that the State Fire Marshal, Railroad Commission, and Lamar County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a joint investigation.

Chicota, Powderly, Lamar Point, and Faught were the first three departments that responded. Lamar County Emergency Management was also called to the scene and aided Chicota in setting up incident command. Paris Fire Department, Paris EMS, Roxton, and Brookston quickly followed to the scene.  

A press release is expected Tuesday afternoon with more information as the ongoing investigation reveals more of what happened.
