Texas GOP is calling for the state’s legislature to pass legislation placing Texas independence on the 2023 General Election ballot, ultimately calling for a statewide vote for Texas to return to an independent nation.
The plank, plank 225, received more than 80 percent of delegate votes during June’s convention. Plank 33, calling for State Sovereignty, received more than 88 percent of delegate votes.
“Texas Independence: We urge the Texas Legislature to pass bill in its next session requiring a referendum in the 2023 General Election for the people of Texas to determine whether or not the State of Texas should reassert its status as an independent nation,” Plank 225.
Plank 33 reads, “State Sovereignty: Pursuant to Article 1, Section 1, of the Texas Constitution, the federal government has impaired our right of local self-government. Therefore, federally mandated legislation that infringes upon the 10th Amendment rights of Texas should be ignored, opposed, refused, and nullified. Texas retains the right to secede from the United States, and the Texas Legislature should be called upon to pass a referendum consistent thereto.”
Texas Nationalist Movement officials said the TEXIT plank received more delegate votes (more than 90%) during June’s convention than any other core or hot-button Republican issue, which included the Convention of States (78.9%), Border Security and Immigration (85.64%), prosecution of Election Fraud (83.95%), and support of the Armed Forces (89.12%).
“While the opposition and political establishment continue to push the narrative that TEXIT is a fringe idea pushed by a vocal minority of Texans, they have again been exposed as abject liars or woefully out-of-touch with Texas voters,” Texas Nationalist Movement officials said in a statement.
Authored by State Rep. Kyle Biedermann, HB 1359 titled Texas Independence Referendum Act was introduced during Texas Legislature’s 87th legislative session. Though no action was taken on the bill, it was referred to the State Affairs Committee within the first week of March 2021.
“Republican voters have overwhelmingly made their voices heard and want a vote on Texas independence,” Biedermann said. “I knew this when I filed the bill. Unfortunately, most of my colleagues tried to deny it. There’s no denying it now.”
Nate Smith, the Executive Director of the TNM, signaled what this means for the organization’s efforts moving toward the next legislative session.
Executive Director of the Texas Nationalist Movement Nate Smith, after visiting with more than 1,000 Texas voters – gathering signatures on a petition to place the vote on the election ballot – said “it’s no surprise to see support from 90% of convention delegates.
“The majority of Texans clearly want a chance to have their voice heard on this issue at the ballot box,” Smith continued. “Any elected official would be snubbing their nose at Texans (and be unlikely to get re-elected) if they did not sign onto a bill in this next session calling for a TEXIT referendum in 2023.”
