With the new school year just around the corner, schools are beginning to roll out new cell phone policies after Governor Abbott signed House Bill 1481 into law last month.
HB 1481 mandates that school districts and open-enrollment charter schools prohibit the use of personal communication devices by students during instructional time and on school property.
This includes devices like cell phones, smartwatches, and other devices capable of transmitting or receiving data.
The new law aims to reduce distractions, improve focus, and enhance the learning environment.
Locally, Prairiland ISD announced it will no longer permit the use of cell phones, in accordance with HB 1481, last week.
“We are currently working to update the new legislation,” said Prairiland ISD. “Please begin having discussions with you students now in order to plan accordingly for the upcoming school year.”
Paris, North Lamar and Chisum ISD are yet to announce an updated cell phone policy.
