Richard Wayne “Dickie” Towers went to be with His Lord on Saturday, March 7th , 2026. He was born to Elmer D. and Maureen Towers on Jan. 2, 1945.
Dickie had a love of sports that began as a child, and he would ride his bicycle every day down to the Boy’s Club. He was captain of his high school basketball team (where his elbow-throwing became infamous) and was an All-State pitcher his Junior year.
After High School, Dick continued his baseball career by playing 2 years at Paris Junior College, 2 years at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!), and 3.5 years with the Braves Organization.
Coming back to Paris in 1973, Dick became a business owner with Towers Used Trucks and Wrecker Service. He also volunteered with the Sheriff’s Reserve. Dick coached many young men in baseball in Lamar County and is remembered fondly by those men.
Pre-deceasing Dick were his parents, his brother Norman Towers and sister-in-law, Patsy Russell Towers.
Dick married Barbara Bowen in October of 1969, and is survived by her, as well as their children and loved relatives. Those include their children: Stephanie, Ric (wife Ricci), Russ, and Rebecca; Dick’s grandchildren: Montgomery, Tara, Alex, and Anthony, along with 5 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Ken Bowen (wife Lesley); a niece and two nephews: Shana Kay Bowen, Tim Towers (wife Tina) and Jim Towers (wife Melanie), along with many great-nieces and great-nephews. Finally, Dick had a special cousin, Don Nelms and wife Millie. The family wishes to impart profound gratitude to all the practitioners, nurses, therapists, etc. who skillfully cared for our dad, considering his complex health conditions. In lieu of any flowers, the family wishes that those inclined would offer donations to the Boys and Girls Club of Paris.
There will be a gathering of family and friends from 1 – 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 29th at First Christian Church. Cremation was under the care and direction of Bright-Holland Funeral Home. Inurnment will be made in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.
