Locals from Red River and Lamar Counties are coming together after a late-night structure fire took the home of a family just outside of Detroit.
It is unknown at this time what started the fire; however, the family of nine have lost everything.
Detroit ISD put the original call for help out to their district this morning, asking for clothes and basic necessities from the community.
“Last night, one of our local families lost their home and everything inside due to fire. Sizes will be posted at a later time, but for now, we are accepting any donations at the front doors of the elementary school beside the office,” posted Detroit ISD. “Please just drop your items there, and someone will come out and get them. This includes toiletries, home goods, toys, and anything else that can be stored at this time.”
Godmother to the children, Amanda Willows, said when she heard of what happened, she immediately reached out to the family to see what they were needing.
“My heart sank when I found out who it was,” Willows said. “Luckily, they woke up to what was happening, and they all made it out of the house safely.”
Willows said that there was nothing left of the home except for the chimney standing. So, she joined the efforts already seen by Detroit ISD and put out a call for some clothes and essentials that locals may be willing to donate.
“I know first hand what it feels like after losing your home to a fire,” she said. “And the need for some essentials during the first few days and weeks. I just wanted to do what I could to help them out.”
As well as asking for those that may be able to donate clothes, toiletries and essential day to day items, Willows also set up a GoFundMe page for people who may be willing to give some monetary relief.
“With all that is happening right now, I understand some people may not want to donate clothes and such. So I set up the page in case they wanted to help still. The money is going directly to the family and will help with them to get the things they need while they work through this time,” she added.
For anyone that is wanting to donate items, they can be dropped off at the Detroit Elementary school beside the office and you can check with the Detroit ISD Facebook page for updates.
