A group of 20 Chisum High School seniors had their punishment reduced earlier today after parents met with the Superintendent to discuss the severe punishment they received for participating in a senior prank.
“There were streamers, balloons, post-its, pictures of staff with little drawn-in mustaches, cups in the floor right when you walk in, moved a bunch of tables to the gym, and a pyramid with big trash cans,” said parent Tara Sweat. “It was great. Different friend groups came together, had a good time, laughed, joked, and made memories they will never forget.”
However, not everyone thought the prank was funny with one teacher calling the students “teenage dirtbags,” claiming there was damage to school property, according to parents.
Sweat said her son was told he would receive ‘in-school suspension,’ however other parents said their kids were told they’d not only get ISS but they’d have to write/copy 45 pages of the handbook before they received their diplomas, and would not be allowed to participate in their award assembly or graduation.
On Tuesday, several parents met with Superintendent Tommy Chalaire to discuss the incident and later expressed their appreciation for him in resolving the issue immediately, so their children could walk the stage.
“Mr Chalaire did a great job in rectifying the situation,” said Sweat.
Stacie Johnson shared online, “Thankful for a superintendent (Tommy Chalaire) who handles business appropriately. A group of 18 students who participated in a Senior Prank at a school they have loved their whole lives and represented outstandingly in sports and academics will do 4 periods of ISS.”
The students were not only able to participate in the awards assembly and graduation rehearsal earlier today but they also won’t have to copy the handbook to receive their diplomas.
“The teacher, who does not share the general consensus of the staff, that called the group ‘teenage dirtbags’ and lied to an entire classroom full of students saying they damaged school property will be dealt with accordingly. I pray these kids don’t leave this school with a bad taste in their mouths. We will focus on the many, many years of success and fun times at Chisum ISD,” said Johnson.
myparistexas.com reached out to Chisum ISD Superintendent Tommy Chalaire for comment but had received a response at the time of publication.
