President Trump signs animal cruelty bill into law, making it a federal felony

On Monday afternoon, animal cruelty officially became a federal felony after President Donald Trump signed the bill into law.

The bipartisan bill, Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act, criminalizes certain acts of animal cruelty. The bill was passed in the Senate by unanimous decision on Nov. 5 after being approved in the House in late October.

“This is something that should have happened a long time ago,” said President Trump. 

According to a fact sheet of the bill, it will make it will prohibit extreme acts of cruelty including burning, crushing, and drowning of an animal. It also cracks down on sexual abuse of animals. Creating and distributing animal cruelty videos will also a crime.

A violator of this bill would be subject to criminal penalties such as a fine or prison term up to seven years or both.
