The United Way of Lamar County is proud to announce that PJC President Dr. Stephen M. Benson has joined their Board of Directors.
Dr. Stephen M. Benson is a seasoned higher education leader with over 25 years of experience in financial administration, institutional planning, and executive leadership. Since June 2024, he has served as the President of Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas, where he is focused on enhancing operational efficiency, driving strategic enrollment growth, expanding academic and workforce development opportunities, strengthening student success initiatives, ensuring financial sustainability, fostering a positive college culture, and deepening community engagement.
Prior to his presidency, Dr. Benson served as Vice President of Finance & Administration at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in fortifying the institution’s financial health, increasing enrollment, and improving faculty and staff compensation structures. His leadership was instrumental in guiding the college’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, securing critical federal funding, and implementing a comprehensive strategic enrollment management plan.
Dr. Benson’s career includes key leadership roles at Florida Gateway College, New River Community and Technical College, William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital, and West Virginia Wesleyan College. In these positions, he managed multi-million-dollar budgets, oversaw campus infrastructure and facilities, and led large teams in financial and administrative services. His expertise in fiscal management, strategic planning, and institutional effectiveness has contributed significantly to the long-term success of the institutions he has served.
Beyond his executive leadership in higher education, Dr. Benson has a deep passion for music and community service. He has served as a community choral director, church music director, and board member for various arts and nonprofit organizations, reflecting his commitment to cultural and educational enrichment.
Dr. Benson holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Keiser University, a Master of Science in Strategic Leadership from Mountain State University, and a Bachelor of Music Education from West Virginia Wesleyan College. He has been actively engaged in professional associations, including serving as an officer for the Texas Association of Community College Business Officers and the West Virginia Higher Education Business Officers, contributing to policy development at both state and national levels.
Dr. Benson is married to Christy Benson, the financial manager for MPL Corporation, a computer software company based in West Virginia. They have one daughter, Kiersten, who is a freshman chemistry major at the University of Texas at Austin.
A dedicated leader, educator, and advocate for student success, Dr. Benson remains committed to driving innovation and excellence at Paris Junior College, ensuring its lasting impact on students and the broader community.
