Paris Junior College Athletics announced today that Head Softball Coach Shelby Shelton has accepted the head coaching position at Southern Arkansas University, concluding the most successful coaching tenure in the history of the Lady Dragons softball program.
Shelton leaves Paris Junior College after six seasons at the helm of the program, where she transformed PJC Softball into one of the premier junior college programs in the nation. Since taking over prior to the 2021 season, Shelton compiled an outstanding 253-90 overall record, good for a remarkable .738 winning percentage, while building a championship culture defined by elite performance on the field, excellence in the classroom, and player development at the highest level.
Under Shelton’s leadership, the Lady Dragons reached unprecedented heights, making three NJCAA Softball World Series appearances in 2022, 2025, and 2026. Her 2022 squad captured the Mid-South B District Championship and finished 6th in the nation, while the 2026 team delivered the best finish in program history with a Final Four appearance and 4th-place national finish.
Shelton guided the Lady Dragons to back-to-back Region XIV Championships in 2025 and 2026, firmly establishing Paris Junior College as a perennial national contender. The 2026 team also set a new program record with 52 wins, capping off a three-year stretch in which the Lady Dragons broke the school record for wins in three consecutive seasons, improving from 44 wins in 2024, to 50 wins in 2025, and 52 wins in 2026.
Beyond the wins and championships, Shelton built a program centered on player development and academic excellence. During her tenure, PJC Softball produced 34 All-Conference selections, 22 All-Region selections, and 11 All-Americans. Shelton also coached multiple major award winners, including producing the NJCAA National Home Run Leader twice with Gabby Sosa in 2025 and Christi McGuire in 2026, while numerous Lady Dragons earned conference, regional, and national player-of-the-year honors.
Shelton’s coaching excellence was recognized throughout her tenure with six district and regional Coach of the Year honors, in addition to the 2025 NFCA NJCAA Division I Midwest Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award.
Shelton’s impact extended far beyond competition. In 2026, the Lady Dragons were named the NJCAA Softball National Academic Team of the Year, posting an exceptional 3.95 team GPA, a testament to the culture of discipline and excellence built within the program.
“Coach Shelby Shelton has done an outstanding job leading our softball program to new heights while making a tremendous impact on the lives of our student-athletes and within
our community,” said Dr. Stephen Benson, President of Paris Junior College. “We are grateful for all she has done for Paris Junior College and wish her continued success as she begins this exciting new opportunity at Southern Arkansas.”
Paris Junior College Athletic Director Clay Cox reflected on Shelton’s legacy and the lasting foundation she leaves behind.
“Leave it better than you found it. That is exactly what Coach Shelby Shelton did during her tenure as head softball coach here at Paris Junior College. She elevated this program into one that is widely regarded as an elite competitor on the national stage year after year. Our program is stronger today because of her leadership, vision, and commitment to excellence. We could not be more excited for her and this next chapter in her career. No matter where she goes, she will always remain a part of the Dragon family, and we wish her nothing but continued success.”
Shelton leaves behind more than wins, trophies, and accolades. She leaves a legacy of championship standards, player development, academic excellence, and a program that is firmly established among the nation’s elite.
Paris Junior College Athletics extends its sincere gratitude to Coach Shelby Shelton for her dedication, leadership, and the tremendous impact she made on the Lady Dragon softball program. She will always remain an important part of the Dragon family.
