On Jan. 8, officers conducted a traffic stop in the 1300 block of N. Main St. for a traffic violation. Officers made contact with the driver, Heath Jared Smallwood (39) who was observed to have a marijuana cigarette in his lap. Smallwood confirmed that the object in his lap was marijuana and was ordered from the vehicle while a search was conducted. Smallwood admitted to officers that he had methamphetamine on his person and was searched. He was found to have a pipe used smoking methamphetamine as well as marijuana and methamphetamine in his pockets on his person. Further drug paraphernalia including a scale commonly used for weighing narcotics for sales purposes was found inside the vehicle. Smallwood was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled substance, A Felony. He was booked without incident.
On Jan. 7, while investigating a stolen vehicle incident, officers of the NE Texas Auto Theft Task Force recovered a handgun stolen in a separate Burglary of a vehicle. The handgun had not been reported as stolen as the owner was awaiting serial number information but officers were able to trace the firearm back to the owner who had purchased the handgun in December of 2024. The investigation is ongoing.
