North Lamar Independent School District is proud to announce that Caitlyn Berry, first-grade teacher at Everett Elementary, has been named the Region 8 Elementary Teacher of the Year.
This prestigious honor recognizes her exceptional dedication, innovative teaching practices, and unwavering commitment to student success.
Berry, who has been teaching first grade for North Lamar ISD since 2021, began her career in education as a paraprofessional. Her early classroom experience, coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Education Learning and Technology from Texas A&M University-Commerce, has shaped her ability to integrate technology, hands-on learning, and differentiated instruction into her lessons.
In 2023, Berry was named Best Teacher by The Paris News Reader’s Choice Awards, following her earlier recognition as Best Teacher’s Aide in 2021. She is also ESL certified, LETRS-trained, and an active leader on campus committees, serving as grade-level team lead, mentor, and member of the Campus Improvement and Sunshine Committees.
Berry’s teaching philosophy centers on building strong foundational skills in literacy, particularly early phonics, through a multisensory, inclusive approach. She ensures that every child—regardless of background, ability, or learning style—feels valued, engaged, and capable of achieving success.
“Relationships matter,” Berry said. “Students thrive when they know they are cared for, when they feel safe, and when they see that their voices matter. I believe in creating an environment where all students are seen, valued, and inspired to learn.”
Her lessons often incorporate storytelling, movement, and culturally relevant connections to bring phonics and reading to life for her diverse group of learners, which includes students with special needs, gifted and talented students, and English language learners.
As Region 8 Elementary Teacher of the Year, Berry will now represent the region in the Texas Teacher of the Year program, where she will be considered for state honors.
“Caitlyn’s dedication to her students and her ability to create an engaging, inclusive classroom make her an outstanding representative for our district and for Region 8,” said Melissa Allen, NLISD Director of Public Relations. “Her passion for teaching is evident in everything she does.”
North Lamar ISD congratulates Caitlyn Berry on this remarkable achievement and celebrates her impact on both the district and the community.
