North Lamar holds masterclass with Julian Bliss

Band students study with one of the world’s finest charinettests.

Julian Bliss, one of the world’s finest clarinetists, will be working with North Lamar band students on Thursday, October 24 in a series of masterclasses at the middle school and high school.

Area school bands have been invited to attend any of the masterclasses sponsored by Conn-Selmer and Saied’s Music.

At 8:50 to 10 a.m., Bliss will begin at Stone Middle School with a beginning approach to clarinet. Discussion will include embouchure, tone, reeds, quality clarinet, tonguing and practice habits with musical demonstrations. Select middle school students will help demonstrate all region music.

From 12:15 to 1:30 p.m., high school students will meet with Bliss in the NLHS band hall. He will discuss how to become a great performer touching on topics such as practice habits, musical expression and performance anxiety. Students will hear his story on the rise to fame with musical demonstrations. Select high school students will help demonstrate all region music.

The last of the masterclasses will be from 1:50 to 3:00 p.m. in the NLHS choir room. He will meet with clarinet players discussing equipment, warm up and daily routines and practice habits with musical demonstrations. Select high school students will help demonstrate all region music.
