Bright-Holland Funeral Home has scheduled graveside services, with Masonic Rites, for 2:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28th at Red Oak Cemetery with Rev. Larry Bridges officiating.
JR, the son of James Thomas Ray and Oneita Wood Ray, was born March 23, 1929, in Blossom, TX. As a child he went on milk deliveries with his father, and he later began his own construction business, Aspermont Oilfield Construction, at the tender age of 22.
JR married Ruby Newberry in 1946, and was preceded in death by Ruby. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Marlene Connot Ray. He was preceded in death by his parents, Memaw and Gramps, 3 brothers, 4 sisters.
Survivors include 4 sons and 4 stepsons. There are many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren who lovingly call him Poppy. He will be missed, especially his popping of old timey popcorn on the stove for his sweet grandbabies!
During his lifetime, JR was involved in many activities that helped others: Boy Scouts, Masonic Lodge, and church. He was a school board member, an inventor, and a lover of nature. He always loved life and was so positive. We will miss his laugh and the gentle ways by which he lived his life.
The family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
