Highway finally received some new wheels thanks to Deborah Callaway after he was hit by a bus and left on a highway in May.
“Deborah is always generous with the greatest intentions, not only a dear friend to us but all who walk on four legs as well,” Carla Stowe, Baby Gunn’s Animal Rescue President said. “We are so grateful for all she does in support of this rescue.”
On May 14, Highway was found after being hit by a bus on 271 N. Near Loves gas station, and was taken to Love All Paws Veterinary Clinic in Reno for emergency care.
Highway was left with a completely fractured left leg and road rash and lacerations on his right leg.
Dr. Gatlin was unable to operate shortly after the accident because Highway’s white blood count was elevated, and infection had set in on some of his leg wounds.
“She said if they amputated the leg, he wouldn’t be able to walk because it was the hip on the opposite side that was fractured,” Sheri Ashford with Baby Gunn’s Animal Rescue said. “So we had to think about getting him a doggy wheelchair.”
Hannah Jenkins, a Vet Tech with Dr. Lisa Gatlins’ Love All Paws, said it took a while for Highway to stabilize.
“We had him in a cast for a while, until he was able to finally put pressure on his back legs,” she said. “We were hopeful he would make it and we sat in the floor with him for a while to help him feel better. We were mostly concerned he may never use his back legs again.”
Ashford said Highway has been at Dr. Gatlin’s Love All Paws, and “he would scoot himself around on the floor to be with the girls up front until Deborah Callaway got him that wheelchair and that’s the first day he had been up since the date of the accident.”
