George G. “Mike” Hamilton, 81, of Paris, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at Brentwood Terrace Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
The family has scheduled a celebration of his life at the Citizen Potawatomi Nation on May 17th . Cremation was under the care and direction of Bright-Holland Funeral Home.
Mike was born March 23, 1943, in Vici, OK to Ambrose Andrew Hamilton, Jr. and Wauneta Jo Steele Hamilton.
He grew up on a cattle and horse ranch in western Oklahoma. During his junior high, high school, and college years he was involved with rodeo as a contestant working all three rough stock events and even clowning a few rodeos. Mike’s announcing career began almost by accident in 1964. Since that time, he spent many years behind the microphone as a Radio Disc Jockey, and M.C., horse show announcer and above all as a PRCA rodeo announcer. He went to NWOSU in Alva, OK, where he met his first wife, Cheryl Walcott. Mike received his Bachelor’s degree in 1967, in Elementary Education and his Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1969. He taught high school math and was a counselor for many years. Mike was a private pilot and flew his family to rodeos that he announced in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. The Freedom Rodeo in Freedom, OK was billed as the biggest open rodeo in Oklahoma and was his favorite to announce. Mike was a great storyteller. He taught his grandchildren to respect the Potawatomi Nation and have great pride in their heritage.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Dan Hamilton, and a sister, Donna Amparan.
Survivors include six children; Michael Shawn Hamilton and wife Robbin, Cheri Dawn Lewis and husband Duane, and Patrick Shane Hamilton and wife Deena which were born from his marriage to Cheryl Walcott (now Waldroupe).
