If you thought your allergies were bad right now you’re not imagining it, nor are you alone.

Allergy sufferers are feeling the wrath of high pollen levels in Lamar County with top allergens being ragweed, grasses and elm, according to pollen.com

Over the next five days, pollen levels will remain high with not much refer in sight.

“Weather plays a direct role in the severity and length of the allergy season,” said pollen.com, “weather conditions will increase the amount of pollen production to yield high pollen levels or decrease pollen production to yield low pollen levels.”

Rain can reduce the pollen count by washing pollen from the air, thereby providing relief for allergy sufferers. Although sometimes rain can cause an adverse effect: rain in late fall or winter can increase tree pollination amounts, causing higher pollen levels. Increased rain in spring makes grass grow faster to produce more unwanted pollen.

mayoclinic.org says to combat allergies to reduce your exposure to the things that trigger your allergy signs and symptoms (allergens):

  • Stay indoors on dry, windy days. The best time to go outside is after a good rain, which helps clear pollen from the air.
  • Delegate lawn mowing, weed pulling and other gardening chores that stir up allergens.
  • Remove clothes you’ve worn outside and shower to rinse pollen from your skin and hair.
  • Don’t hang laundry outside — pollen can stick to sheets and towels.
  • Wear a pollen mask if you do outside chores.
