Barbara June Brooks, 85, of Powderly, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at The Home Place surrounded by her family, just one day before her 86th birthday.
Services are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1st at Bright-Holland Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Sanders officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will be made in Long Cemetery.
Mrs. Brooks, the daughter of Elbert Truitt Melton and Rosa Townsend Melton, was born Jan. 29, 1939, in Red River County, TX.
In her early career she was a telephone operator. Other years were spent as a salesclerk with many of those years at Levines. Barbara’s most important role in life was being a wife, mother, and caretaker to the family and many others. She was a member of the Powderly Church of God.
On April 26, 1958, she married W. C. Brooks, building 66 years of family and memories before his death on Nov. 13, 2024. She was also preceded in death by her parents and four siblings, Shirley Parker, Patricia Simpson, Gary Melton, and Ricky Melton.
Survivors include two sons, Carl Brooks and wife Becky and Terry Brooks and wife Susan, grandchildren, Tonya Chipman and husband John, Jessica Callaway and husband Jason, and Ashley Clement, great grandchildren, Logan Carter, Brooklynn Carter, Dakota Chipman, Mackenzie Chipman, Lexi Clement, Zack Callaway, Elliott Callaway, Johnny Lee Callaway, and Allieya Chhoeuy and one great great granddaughter, Miller Rae Chipman along with numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
