Phillip Don Walker, 74, passed away on May 13, 2026, at Carrus Specialty Hospital in Sherman, Texas.
Phillip was born on September 8, 1951, in Paris, Texas, to John R. and Margie Chennault Walker. Raised in Lamar County, he embodied the independent spirit and rural character of Northeast Texas throughout his life.
Over the years, Phillip worked a variety of trades, including ranch work, long-haul trucking, cable installation, and mechanic work. In his younger years, he rode bulls and wrestled steers and remained an avid deer hunter throughout much of his life. He also served in the United States Army, though military life was never quite suited to his independent nature. Still, it could easily be argued that Phillip’s favorite position was kicked back in his recliner while watching Buckmasters on the Outdoor Channel.
Phillip was most comfortable living life on his own terms. A pair of overalls, camouflage shirts, and a well-worn cap were his preferred attire for most of his life. For special occasions, dressing up often meant adding a blue-jean button-up shirt beneath the overalls. Phillip was not known for sugarcoating his opinions, and most people around him always knew exactly where they stood. Those who knew him understood that Phillip was always unapologetically himself.
On March 23, 1970, he married Delphia “Del” Norwood Walker. Earlier this year, the couple celebrated 56 years of marriage together.
Phillip is survived by his wife, Del; his sons, John Darold Walker of Dallas, Texas, and Zackery Levi Walker of Paris, Texas; his sister, Donna Walker Kennedy and her partner, Richard Ausmus, of Paris, Texas; his brothers, Paul Dwayne Walker of Paris, Texas, and Stephen Shane Walker and his wife, Amy, of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; his grandchildren, Axel Yates, Kash Walker, Iris Walker, and Waylon Walker; his parents-in-law, Darold Deen and Ida Mae Foster Norwood of Cunningham, Texas; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John R. and Margie Chennault Walker; his brother, Johnny Wade Walker, and Johnny’s wife, Debra “Debbie” Dietz Walker; his brother-in-law, David Coleman Kennedy; his sister-in-law, Denette Sanders Walker, wife of Paul; his paternal grandparents, Charles H. and Esta C. Walker; and his maternal grandparents, Clarence W. and Flossie Whitworth Chennault.
In accordance with his wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home. A celebration-of-life memorial service may be announced at a later date.
