Horizon House Transitional Shelter announces with deep regret that it will close its doors on January 31, 2026, barring any unexpected changes in funding. This difficult decision comes after years of operating at a financial shortfall and exhausting every possible avenue to sustain services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Lamar County and surrounding areas.
For the past five years, Horizon House has relied on local donations to operate. Despite community support, the shelter has faced significant funding challenges and has been operating at a deficit since 2023. Over the last three years, the agency, staff, and Board of Directors have worked tirelessly—exploring grants, partnerships, and restructuring options—in hopes of keeping the shelter open. Unfortunately, the agency can no longer financially support the program, despite the critical need it fills in the community.
In preparation for the closure, Horizon House staff have been working diligently and proactively to relocate as many clients as possible. At present, 14 individuals remain in the program. Over the next two months, staff will continue assisting each client with respect, compassion, and individualized care. Efforts will focus on securing adequate long-term housing whenever possible, as well as working with partner agencies and nearby shelters for those whose situations may require relocation.
“The decision to close Horizon House has been heartbreaking,” the agency shared. “We are profoundly grateful for the community’s unwavering support over the past five years. Together, we have helped hundreds of individuals and families stabilize, rebuild, and regain hope. We remain committed to ensuring that every remaining client receives the dignity and support they deserve during this transition.”
Horizon House extends its sincere appreciation to donors, volunteers, partners, and community members who have stood behind the shelter’s mission. While operations will cease in early 2026, the organization remains dedicated to advocating for accessible and compassionate housing resources for vulnerable populations in the region.
