An Eiffel Tower-sized asteroid is expected to fly past Earth in December, according to NASA.
On Dec. 11, the asteroid 4660 Nereus will be at its peaks closeness to Earth at about 2.5 million miles away, and scientists say it poses no danger. According to NASA, the asteroid is about 1,082 feet in diameter, the Eiffel Tower is 1,063 feet tall.
Over the past few weeks, asteroids about the size of cars, houses, commercial jetliner, and the Empire State Building have past by Earth. However, the largest asteroid – 2004 UE – is expected to pass by on Nov. 13. The 2004 UE is 1,246 feet, just four feet shorter than the Empire State Building.
According to NASA, most near-Earth objects pose no risk to our planet, however plans are in the works to create warning systems and diversion tactics if Earth was ever in danger.
