As the temperatures dip below freezing next week, several local organizations are working together to open warming centers for those in need of shelter.
Beginning on Sunday evening, the Salvation Army will feed dinner at 5pm and then open their shelter and gym to house people overnight until 8am. Dinner on Sunday evening is provided by Paris Regional Health. Volunteers are needed at the Salvation Army from 4pm-7pm. The Salvation Army can accommodate 32 men (extra cots in the gym) and 10 women.
City Square will be open during the day from 9am-5pm, serving both breakfast and lunch. They will close their teen center so that the warming center can be open until 5pm. Lamar Avenue Church of Christ will help transport people from the Salvation Army to City Square.
The United Way of Lamar County is still collecting electric heaters to hand out to those without central heat. Heaters may be dropped off at the United Way office at 2340 Lamar Avenue.
Those interested in volunteering can contact the Salvation Army at 903-784-7548 or City Square at 903-706-2990.
