The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol (HP) Division and the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) will partner on a distracted driving joint initiative in an effort to prevent crashes on NTTA toll roads.
Part of the initiative includes NTTA representatives and DPS’s Safety Education Service providing educational outreach on the dangers of texting, eating, and other distracted behaviors while driving. The outreach initiative will utilize social media messaging, community engagement, and on-site awareness events to reinforce safe driving.
In addition to education, DPS Troopers will conduct focused enforcement to identify drivers who are texting or engaging in other distractions while driving, to prevent crashes and improve roadway safety.
“Keeping our roadways safe requires both education and accountability,” said DPS Region Chief Jeremy Sherrod. “Distracted driving is entirely preventable, and this initiative strengthens our ability to reach drivers before a mistake becomes a crash. Our goal is simple: protect lives and make North Texas roads safer for everyone.”
“Safety requires drivers to be fully engaged and completely aware of their surroundings,” said NTTA Assistant Director of Infrastructure Elizabeth Mow. “NTTA fully supports all DPS efforts to prevent distracted driving.”
This collaboration demonstrates a unified commitment and dedication to safeguarding the communities we serve by combining prevention, public awareness, and strategic enforcement.
Schools, businesses, churches, and community organizations interested in hosting a distracted driving program are encouraged to contact a Trooper to schedule a presentation.
