Authorities were told a man killed another after a confrontation in which Bigfoot, the mythical creature, was summoned by the victim to attack and kill the other.
On July 10, Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to investigate the killing of Jimmy Knighten near the south Canadian River. Reportedly, 53-year-old Larry Sanders had killed Knighten by strangling and striking him, according to OSBI.
Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian said officials were told by Sanders that he had felt in danger of “being eaten by Bigfoot” and blamed Knighten for summoning the creature.
“Sometime during that period of time, Mr. Sanders believed Jimmy Knighten had summoned Bigfoot to come and do harm to him, to Mr. Sanders,” Christian told KXII.
Sanders and Knighten had been noodling in the river on July 9, when a confrontation ensued and Sanders had reportedly struck and strangled Knighten. Initially, Sanders was arrested on an outstanding warrant and booked into the Pontotoc County Jail. Knighten’s body was found on July 10, after Pontotoc and Seminole counties’ sheriff deputies and OSBI performed a search of the area.
The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death. OSBI agents subsequently arrested Sanders for Murder in the First Degree. Sanders remains in the Pontotoc County Jail and his mugshot is attached.
