Retired Chief Warrant Officer Reginald Hughes and Zach Saffle with the Credit Union of Texas stopped by Mrs. Cannada’s classroom at Everett Elementary on Thursday, February 12, to pick up handmade Valentine’s cards created especially for local veterans.
The cards were distributed during a Valentine’s luncheon hosted by United Way to honor veterans in the area. Credit Union of Texas served as an underwriter for the special event, helping make the celebration possible for those who have served our country.
Thanks to the thoughtful efforts of Mrs. Ali Cannada, Ms. Keegan Fendley, and Ms. Kaylee Kautz, students spent time decorating heartfelt cards to ensure each veteran attending the luncheon received a personal token of appreciation. Their colorful designs and handwritten messages served as a meaningful reminder of gratitude from the next generation.
During the visit, Ret. Chief Warrant Officer Hughes also took time to speak with students about his service in the United States Navy. He answered questions about his time in the military and shared photos of the USS Harry S. Truman, the aircraft carrier where he was stationed. Students were captivated as they learned about life aboard the massive ship and the responsibilities of serving at sea.
This special connection between students and veterans highlights the power of community partnerships and the importance of teaching young learners to honor and appreciate those who have sacrificed for our country.
