On-campus students at Detroit Middle School may have been exposed to the coronavirus on Wednesday, Sept. 30, according to Detroit ISD superintendent Kathie Thompson.
In a letter sent to parents Thursday, a student who is lab-confirmed to have COVID-19 was present on the DISD Middle School campus on Wednesday.
“Due to privacy requirements, we will not be releasing the name of the individual(s) or details that may identify him or her. We are working closely with our school nurse, Cady Wolfe, and the local health department on this matter,” said Thompson. “The student was immediately quarantined, necessary areas were thoroughly cleaned and anyone in close contact was notified.”
The positive case is the first for the district.
“While we do not have reason to believe that those who were not in close contact with the infected individual(s) have reason to be concerned, we ask that you, as always, watch for symptoms of COVID-19.”
Any of these following symptoms indicate a possible COVID-19 infection:
- A temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by mouth;
- Sore throat;
- New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing (or, for students with a chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough baseline);
- Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain; or
- New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever.
The school said if your child has symptoms that you are concerned about, please call Mrs. Wolfe and sh can direct you on how to proceed.
“We are asking all of you to be diligent in your efforts to keep your students at home with the onset of any fever. As we move forward in these uncertain times, we want to express our thanks to you. You are very much appreciated because you are staying on top of your child’s health and helping us keep all of our kids safe by following the proper protocols.”
