The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of an ongoing scam call, where an individual claims to be with the sheriff’s office and the person owes fines.
“The citizen advised a male called advising he was Lt. Lane from Lamar County Sheriff’s Office and the citizen owed fines for not appearing for a jury summons,” according to the sheriff’s office. “The citizen was told to send the money to pay the fine via $CashApp.”
The sheriff’s office reassures the community it will not call requesting anyone to send money through a money app.
“These scammers prey on people by playing to be government and law enforcement agents,” the LCSO said. “Please be vigilant in safeguarding and protecting your financial information.”
Anyone concerned about the identity of the caller, contact their claimed agency and verify their identity.
If anyone has been a victim of this kind of fraud, they are urged to contact local law enforcement.
“Stay safe and aware.”
