Senior Jayla Sims won her second straight fifth-place medal at the Texas State Girls Powerlifting Championships in Waco Saturday with a career-best 900-pound total lift in the 165-pound weight class.
Sims’ series included a 350-pound squat, 190-pound bench press, and 360-pound deadlift. She was tied for seventh after two rounds but posted the second highest deadlift in her class to jump into a medal finish. Kerrington Biggers of Snyder won the 165s with a 1,070 total.
Sims finished fifth in the 148-pound weight class as a junior. Her previous career total lift was 870 pounds to win at regionals this season.
Junior Ansley Downs placed 12th in the 114s with a total lift of 665 pounds. Downs had a 265-pound squat, 125-pound bench press, and 265-pound deadlift. Kaitlyn Pelitire of Beeville Jones won the 114s with a 950-pound total.
Beeville Jones won the team title.
