The upcoming full moon on Oct. 9 is called the Hunter’s Moon. As Native Americans prepared for cold months ahead, October’s full moon signaled to them to gather meat for the upcoming winter, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.
“Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October, hunters could easily see both deer and fox that have come in search of fallen grains by the light of the moon,” according to the Farmers’ Almanac. “The October Moon is also historically accorded with special honor as an important day of feast among both Native American tribes and in western Europe.”
The next full moon will be on Nov. 8, called the Beaver Moon.
