The UIL District of the National Speech and Debate Association held its national qualifying tournament last weekend.  Four North Lamar High School students placed among the top three in their events qualifying them for the National Speech and Debate Tournament to be held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in June.

Qualifying for nationals was the Cross Examination Debate team of Colin Hodgkiss and Zach Huffman who placed second in their event. Individual qualifiers who competed in International Extemporaneous Speaking were Huffman, first place, Hodgkiss, second place, and Mason Remaley, third place.   In Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking, Katie Hodgkiss placed second to qualify for nationals.  At nationals, students can only compete in one event. Colin Hodgkiss and Huffman have chosen to compete in CX Debate.

Alternate to nationals were the Cross Examination Debate teams of Katie Hodgkiss and Remaley, who placed fourth, and Garrett Holzwarth and Isabella Lo Cicero, who placed fifth. Holzwarth was also named an alternate to nationals with his fourth place win in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking.

North Lamar competed against all sizes of schools in Northeast Texas including Dallas and the Waco area.  NLHS placed second in Speech Sweepstakes, second in overall sweepstakes, and received the trophy for Excellence through the years.

NLHS principal Clay Scarborough was also named Principal of the Year by the UIL District of the National Speech and Debate Association for his support of forensics and the North Lamar team.

In an email to the District, sponsor Kristi Hodgkiss said, “We are grateful to him for his support and encouragement, and would like to take this chance to say thank you.”
