The filing period for the May Paris City Council election closed at 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 13. Four of the seven council positions are up for election this year.
The incumbents in districts 2, 3, and 6 all filed for reelection with no challengers submitting applications. One person applied to represent District 1, in which the incumbent is not seeking reelection.
Council member Shatara Moore of district 1 did not file for reelection. Stacy Ladell is the only applicant for that seat. Mickey Ellis was appointed to fill an unexpired term as the district 2 representative in 2024 and will begin his first elected term in May.
District 3 council member Gary Savage also serves as Mayor Pro Tem. Savage was appointed to fill an unexpired term in 2020 and will start his third consecutive elected term in May. District 6 representative Alix Putnam was first elected in 2024 and will start her second elected term in May.
Per the City Charter, the Paris City Council consists of seven members, each representing one of the city’s districts. Council members are elected to serve two-year terms and can serve three consecutive terms.
After serving for three consecutive elected terms, council members cannot serve again before being off the council for at least two years. Council members appointed to fill unexpired terms are allowed to run for three elected terms in addition to the unexpired term.
Districts 1, 2, 3, and 6 are elected in even-numbered years. Districts 4, 5, and 7 are considered in the May election during odd-numbered years.
After swearing in the representatives during their May meeting, the council will select a Mayor and a Mayor Pro Tem from their peers to serve for the upcoming year.
