The good Lord lovingly called Monty into His presence on October 15, 2021 from Monty’s home in Dallas, Texas. Monty was born on January 14, 1933 to Stephen and Wina Mills in Louwsburg, South Africa, the eldest of four children.
By God’s grace, Monty trusted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior on September 11, 1943. Monty said this was the most important day of his life as that is when his eternal life began (John 3:16; 10:27-29).
At the age of fourteen, Monty met his future wife, Esther Syren. They started courting eight years later and were married on December 15, 1956. They were blessed with three children and two grandsons. Monty loved his family extraordinarily well.
After attending the University of Natal in Durban, Monty qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1954, became a partner in an international accounting firm, and enjoyed a successful business career for twenty-five years. He served on the board of more than forty companies and organizations in South Africa. Monty was a licensed pilot and in 1972, with Esther, flew a single-engine airplane around the United States, across the Atlantic, around Europe, and down the length of Africa.
In response to God’s leading, Monty moved his family to Dallas, Texas in 1975, and earned a four-year Master of Theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1978, being awarded the prize for best expository student in his class. After graduation, Monty began writing detailed Study Guides for every New Testament book, much of the Old Testament, as well as many Doctrinal Studies. Monty’s major work, the multi-volume Life of Jesus Christ, was based on The Consolidated Gospel, in which he harmonized the four gospels and provided a chronological report of Jesus’ life and ministry.
Monty spent over four decades teaching multiple Bible studies in Texas and Oklahoma. Some of these were in well-known Baptist, United Methodist and Bible churches and he also conducted numerous cross-denominational classes. Monty led several “Walking Where Jesus Walked” pilgrimages to Israel and one tracing Paul’s Footsteps in Greece.
Monty is survived by his devoted wife, Esther, daughter Diann Addison, sons Stephen (Erica) Mills and David (Gretchen) Mills, and grandsons Conrad (Morgan) Mills and Trent Mills. Other survivors are Monty’s brother Alfred (Deirdre) Mills and sister Cheryl (Hennie) Le Roux, sisters- and brothers- in-law Pauline Syren, Vic (Bella) Syren, and Trevor Macpherson, and a large extended family. Monty was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Wina Mills, sister Orlean Mills, and son-in-law James H. Addison.
Monty’s memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 2 p.m., Scofield Church, 7730 Abrams Road, Dallas Texas 75231.
