A Fannin County Sheriff’s Office deputy was injured Tuesday night when an alleged intoxicated driver crashed head-on into his patrol vehicle on Highway 121 near Randolph.
Around 8:30 p.m., the deputy pulled over at Hwy 121 and Business 121 just outside of Randolph to intercept a reckless driver who was approaching the area.
“As the deputy was watching for the reported vehicle, it was spotted northbound as it left its lane of travel and crashed head-on into the deputy in his patrol car where he was parked off the highway,” said Fannin County Sheriff Cody Shook.
Both the deputy and suspect were transported by EMS for minor injuries and released from hospital.
The suspect driver, Michael Anthony Smith of Anna, TX, was arrested by Texas DPS Troopers for Driving While Intoxicated and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
He was booked into the Fannin County Jail.
“This event highlights the many dangers that law enforcement faces everyday. I am grateful for the dedicated deputies that work 24hrs a day to protect our communities. Last night we were fortunate the deputy only sustained minor injuries and was able to walk away. Prayers for protection of your local law enforcement are always appreciated.”
