Lamar Avenue Church of Christ celebrated the 100th birthday of their oldest member, Naomi Bassett recently. Mrs. Bassett was joined by her biological family and church family in the Church’s Outreach Building with dinner and a birthday cake.

Originally from Cooper, TX, Mrs. Bassett and her late husband, L.W. “Dub” Bassett, raised their family at Lamar Avenue where Mrs. Bassett taught first and second grade Sunday school for over 40 years. Her late husband served as a deacon and elder there for over 50 years.

During the celebration, Dr. Kyle Jones, one of the Church’s current elders, read an inspirational essay, “Just For Today”, which Mrs. Bassett reads each day to chart her course and focus her thoughts. The directive was credited to Frank Crane, a newspaper columnist in a 1921 Boston Globe article.

Family members attending were daughter Linda Henny, from Ann Arbor, MI, sons Johnny Bassett, Paris, TX and Gary Bassett, Dallas, TX; granddaughters Erin Stevens, Ypsilanti, MI and Dana Queen, Dexter, MI., and Michael Bassett, Dallas. Great grandsons, James, William, and Thomas Queen, from Dexter, MI also were in attendance.

Mrs. Bassett was joined by many friends at the festivities. One of her childhood friends, Ozella Lilley, joined in the celebration. She is also a member of Lamar Avenue, and will turn 100 in July 2020.
